Once you've decided red light therapy is worth trying (and if you haven't, start with our honest look at the research first), the next question is which kind of device to buy. This is where the market gets confusing, because "red light therapy" covers three quite different form factors that do different jobs, and the two specs that actually matter get buried under marketing noise. Here's the plain version.

The two specs that actually matter

Before form factor, understand these, because they're what separate a real device from an expensive nightlight.

Wavelength. The research clusters around two bands: red light around 630 to 660 nanometers, which is absorbed near the skin surface and is what the skin and complexion studies used, and near-infrared around 810 to 850 nanometers, which penetrates deeper toward muscle and joints. A device that offers both covers more use cases. Be wary of anything that won't tell you its wavelengths at all.

Irradiance (power density). This is how much light energy actually reaches your skin, measured in milliwatts per square centimeter, and it determines how long a session needs to be to deliver a research-relevant dose. Low-irradiance devices aren't useless, but they need longer sessions and closer positioning to matter. This is the number cheap devices hide, so its presence on a spec sheet is itself a good sign.

Panels: the workhorse

A panel is the classic setup: a rigid array of LEDs you stand or sit in front of. Panels generally deliver the highest irradiance of the three formats, which makes them the closest match to what clinical studies used, and better ones like our Panel Pro combine multiple red and near-infrared wavelengths in one unit. They're ideal for targeted work (face, a specific joint or muscle group) and for anyone who wants the most research-aligned dose.

The tradeoff is that you have to sit or stand in front of them, positioned correctly, for the session. They treat whatever's facing them, not your whole body at once. For most people focused on skin or a particular recovery area, that's exactly right. Smaller mini panels handle spot treatment and travel.

Blankets: full-body convenience

A red light blanket wraps flexible LED panels around your whole body while you lie down. The full-body blanket trades some of a panel's raw intensity for total coverage and comfort: you're enveloped rather than facing a fixed array, so it suits people who want a relaxing, hands-off full-body session and who value convenience over maximum targeted dose. Note that blankets do generate gentle warmth, which some people love and is worth knowing if you run hot.

Mats: lie-on-top coverage

A mat is essentially a blanket you lie on rather than wrap around you, treating your back, posterior chain, and whatever's in contact. Our red light mat is a natural fit if your interest is back and posterior muscle recovery, or if you'd rather integrate light sessions into stretching or floor work than stand in front of a panel. Like blankets, coverage is the selling point and per-square-centimeter intensity is the tradeoff.

So which one?

Buy a panel if your priority is skin or targeted recovery and you want the most research-aligned intensity; it's the most versatile starting point. Buy a blanket if you want relaxing, whole-body sessions and will actually use it more because it's comfortable. Buy a mat if back and posterior recovery or floor-based routines are your thing. Many people who get serious end up with a panel for the face plus a blanket or mat for the body, but that's an upgrade path, not a starting requirement.

A note on expectations

No device, at any price, delivers the miracle-cure claims that float around this category. What a good device does deliver is a legitimate, research-backed dose of the wavelengths studied for skin and recovery, consistently and conveniently enough that you'll actually keep using it. Consistency is what the studies had in common, not any single magic product.
